Waking up to a wet and cold day is never fun and is not always easy especially when you have to go into work or school in it. I've always said that this is the perfect sleeping weather! A matter of fact, conditions won't change much throughout the course of the day with even more rain to come. Temperatures are slowly dropping as cooler temperatures behind this low pressure system begin to filter in. Now, if you haven't been paying attention to the weather across the nation, lots of snow have already fallen in the northern and eastern portion of Texas, Arkansas, and in the Oklahoma area and is advancing toward Tennessee and further east. The winter weather setup is due because of a surface low pressure system which is moving eastwardly with the combination of cold air from the north. We have two different types of setup going on here. The first is of course the wintery weather and the second setup is thunderstorms containing hail mainly south of all that wintery stuff. Here in Mississippi, most of the wintery weather will be north of us depending on how cold we get here. The more south you go from the cold air, thunderstorms will begin to play apart. So, this is certainly a storm that you definitely don't won't to be caught up in.

Here in Starkville, we are sort of in the middle of things. Most of the snow and ice will impact states above with only the northern edge of Mississippi being impacted. Like I said earlier, though, it all depends on how cold we get here. I do believe we will have a little bit of that wintery mix but only by tonight. For today and throughout the afternoon, we'll mostly received widespread rain mostly moderate rain. Roadways will be wet, so be sure to use caution when driving about. Temperatures will be at or right below 40 with overcast conditions. The National Weather Service has also issued a Lake Wind Advisory until 6p.m. for here and other counties because of sustained winds of more than 20-30 mph. So, a very nasty day in stored for us and throughout the southern regions.

As we go into the night hours, rain will still be in the forecast with cool conditions. I believe it will be safe to say that temperatures will be above freezing, but that doesn't necessarily rule out the possibility of ice and wintery mix. If we do accumulate ice, it won't be much. Winds will be out the north at 10- 15mph.

For your weekend outlook, Saturday looks to be fairly cool with not much sun out. Highs will be in the mid 30s with overcast conditions. So, if you've already put away your winter jacket you might want to consider getting it back out with northwest winds between 10-15mph. By Saturday, clouds begin to gradually clear making for a sunny day on Sunday. Highs should jump back to the mid 40s.

Make sure you take all the precautionary steps to be safe especially when traveling. Have a safe and bless weekend and God bless!

Wednesday forecast for January 27, 2010

Picture brought to you by the weather channel

Today: High of 54 and mostly sunny with clouds moving in by the afternoon

Tonight: Low of 33 with light winds

~Starkville, MS

Goodmorning everyone and thanks for joining me here for yet another Face of the Sky forecast. I hope everyone is having a great day so far enjoying the plenty of sunshine we are having thus far. Last night remained pretty clear for the most with temperatures dropping to the lower 30s. So, its not surprising to wake up to a very cool morning to start your day off. It is refreshing, however, to see the sun out in its full glory with no clouds to hide behind today. Today will not feel as nearly as cold as Monday or Tuesday was with lighten winds and slightly warmer temperatures. High pressure will continue to keep this dry air in place allowing for nice sunny conditions. Highs will get close to the mid 50s with light winds coming out of the south. Even though we are starting off with clear skies, more clouds will be in the sky by the late afternoon hours.

Tonight, a little warmer with lows close to the mid 30s and very light winds. Look for more clouds tonight than in the previous two nights.

For Thursday, a fairly warm day with highs getting close to the 60 degree mark. So, a very warm day in store for us tomorrow as a cold front prepares to swing by on Friday. Now, with this approaching cold front comes some very heavy rain and cold temperatures. Make sure to keep it here as we begin to prepare for a big change in our weather pattern. God bless!

Tuesday for January 26, 2010

Picture brought to you by the weather channel

Today: High of 51 and sunny with northly winds b/w 10 and 20mph.

Tonight: Low of 26 and clear with winds about 5mph from the north.

~Starkville, MS

Hi everyone and thanks for joining me for your Tuesday forecast. The wind still has quite a sting out there with wind speed of 15-20mph from the northwest. We still have high pressure in the south with the combination of low pressure in the north, which with the combination of the two are creating strong winds that we have now in the southern region. With the wind so strong outside it makes for some pretty cool conditions, but don't let that stop you from enjoying this beautiful clear day. For most of today, we will continue to see clear skies with temperatures in the lower 50s. It's not going to get any warmer but will remain dry for the duration of the day. With the high pressure situated in the gulf, it is just going to keep our weather very dry for us. Look for another clear and sunny day tomorrow as well.

Tonight, temperatures will be down near the mid 20s with winds from the north at about 5mph. So, we won't have as much of a strong wind tonight but still make sure to stay warm under those blankets as temperatures dips below freezing. Also, tonight gives us a chance to see some stars out as clear skies will allow for us to see them very clearly if your out and about.

Now, after Wednesday rolls around we do have rain coming back into our forecast for Thursday which will change things a bit as far as conditions go. Thanks for stopping by and be sure to join me tomorrow. God bless!

Monday forecast for January 25, 2010

Picture brought to you by the weather channel

Today: High of 54 and mostly sunny with winds b/w 10 and 20mph.
Wind advisories issued here and in the northern portion of the state from 9a.m. to 5p.m

Tonight: Low of 31 and mostly clear with winds b/w 10 and 20mph.

~Starkville, MS

Good afternoon everyone and thanks for joining me here once again after a week long layoff. I was at the AMS conference (American Meteorological Society) in Atlanta, GA all last week and that is the reason for not being able to write my usual forecast. The conference went by great as I was able to network with many different meteorologists in the field, and also I was able to have fun at the same time with my friends and colleagues that also attended. It was alot of fun and I definitely look forward to more conferences in the future. If you all would like to view my pictures of the trip you can check out my profile on facebook. Another note to add is that I will be doing forecasting shows every Monday and I'll try to post them here when I can. I'll post my show from today later today.

Well, the start of this week is looking rather nicely for us with pleasant conditions and mild temperatures to start the Monday off. The big story here though is the wind factor. Winds will be between 10 to 15mph for most of the day with periods of wind gusts of 40mph. So, it looks like a windy and breezy day for us all throughout most of the day. The cause of this is that we have high pressure located in the Gulf of Mexico and a low pressure to the north of us around the Illinois and Indiana areas. Now, these two combining forces are causing a pressure gradient which in terms boils down to strong, heavy winds in the northern portion of Mississippi. The National Weather Service has also issued a wind advisory for the northern area of MS and Alabama. Usually when a wind advisory is issued out, winds of 35mph is expected. So, even though we will have plenty of sunshine throughout the day with highs in the mid 50s, strong winds will keep conditions cool for us. If your planning on doing any traveling especially in north Mississippi, make sure to drive safely as strong winds will make traveling hazardous.

Tonight, we will continue to have clear skies with clouds appearing throughout the course of the night. A chilly night we have in store for us as lows gets back into the lower 30s. In the last few days, it has been unusually warm for us especially at night, but be prepared to have your heater back on tonight as temperatures dips down slightly below freezing. Winds will make things even cooler still with sustaining winds between 5 to 15mph.

Looking ahead to the next couple of days, we have mostly sunny weather for the first half of the week with mild temperatures up until Wednesday. By Thursday, showers comes back into the forecast and Friday looks to be very cold and will feature a possible chance of snow. I'll definitely keep you updated upon that, so be sure to come back tomorrow here at Face of the Sky forecast for all your latest news and info on the weather! God bless!

"Winter Break"

Picture brought to you by the weather channel

Today: High of 58 and mostly sunny

Tonight: Low of 40 with few clouds

~Starkville, MS

Well, we finally got a chance to see some warmer temperatures as yesterday's high got into the 50s. So, is this the end of the cold period of our winter you may ask? Well, not necessarily as we do have late January and the month of February to contend with, but as of right now you can say we're in the midst of a "winter break". Temperatures throughout the weekend and into next week looks to be fairly warm with 60s possibly popping up next week. We do, however, have rain making its way back into our forecast.

This morning is starting off very cool for us but will quickly warm up as we get closer to the mid afternoon hours. Clear skies early in the morning will change with more clouds coming throughout the day but still with plenty of sunshine. By the mid afternoon hours, we should see temperatures around the mid to upper 50s. So, a beautiful day in store for us. Now, as soon as the sun starts to set, those temperatures will start to drop as fast through the late evening hours and during night. The low will be at the low end of the 40s with scattered clouds and winds out of the east northeast at 5 mph.

For your weekend outlook, temperatures will still be in the 50s, but rain is in the picture for Saturday. During the early mornings of Saturday and into the afternoon hours, conditions will be clear of rain. So, if you need to go out or you have plans that will be outdoors it's best to do them early during the day. Also, for all the students who are planning on going home for the three-day weekend, it'll probably be in your best interest to go in the morning hours. My picture above is a map depicting interstates here in the south and it is illustrating weather conditions along the roadway. Of course, today and Saturday morning would make for some good travel conditions, but heading into the afternoon hours you will run into some heavy rain especially if your going south Mississippi or Alabama. Here in Starkville, rain should arrive around 2-5 p.m. From then on it will be a washout with lots of heavy rain and strong winds to go along with it. The rain will stick around throughout late Saturday night and will move off by Sunday morning. Look for highs on Saturday to be in the lower 50s. Sunday looks to be a mostly cloudy day with temperatures in the 50s.

As we look ahead into next week, we could possibly see temps hit lower 60s with more rain coming by mid week. Enjoy the weekend and the Monday off and be safe if your doing any traveling. God bless!

Wednesday forecast on Jan. 13, 2010

Picture brought to you by the weather channel

Today: High of 46 with winds out of the south at 5 mph

Tonight: Low of 25 with clear skies and light winds

~Starkville, MS

Well, its already much warmer than it has been in the last couple of days with beautiful clear skies to go along with those warmer temps today. Currently, at this hour the temperature is in the mid 30s and for your daytime high it should get up to the mid 40s today.

Today, will be the start of a little warming trend as temperatures will continually rise throughout the week. Even by tomorrow, temperatures should be well off into the 50s. We do have a change in wind direction also as it shifts from the north to the south bringing in warm air out the Gulf of Mexico. High pressure still remains here in the south allowing for dry conditions and beautiful clear skies for your Wednesday afternoon. However, by tonight those temperatures will quickly begin to drop as clear skies will allow for the surface to cool off very rapidly. Temperatures will be around the mid 20s for tonight with light wind. So, it won't be as cold as it has been but you will still need a coat if your going out tonight.

Tomorrow, look for temperatures to be around the mid 50s with clouds coming back into the forecast. Hopefully, we can all thaw out with these warmer temperatures and beautiful weather today as well as the following days. Looking ahead to Saturday, we do have rain returning back into our forecast so enjoy as much of these dry conditions as you can. God bless!

Tuesday forecast on Jan. 12. 2010

Today: High of 38 with clear skies and plenty of sunshine

Tonight:
Low of 23 with clear skies and winds out of the north at 5 mph.

~Starkville, MS

A very bright and sunny morning to start your Tuesday off with the cold air still lingering here in the south. It is still quite nippy outside with cold air still flowing from the north to give us that Arctic feel. However, just seeing those clear skies outside just gives you hope for warmer weather ahead for some of you who would like for it to be warmer. High pressure will continue to remain here in the south allowing for clear skies and an ample supply of sunshine for today. The high will struggle to get to the 40 degree mark with 38 being the high for today. The wind chill factor still plays a heavy part in that the high will be 38 but it'll feel more like 28 degrees outside. Northerly flow will continue to keep things rather cool for us coming at us at about 5 to 10 mph.

For tonight, another cool night in store for us once again as lows dips down to the lower 20s. A clear night will allow for you to check out some stars tonight if your outside with winds out of the north a 5 mph. Again, it will feel much cooler than the lower 20s when you add in the wind chill factor.

Tomorrow, will look similiar to today with clear skies being the highlight for tomorrow but with warmer temperatures. Looking ahead to Thursday and Friday, temperatures seems like they are trying to get back to its normal around this time of year with the mid 50s being forecasted as the highs. I'll continue to update you on this warming trend, so be sure to keep it here. Thanks for viewing your Face of the Sky weather blog forecast and God bless!

Tonight: Low of 26 with winds out of the northwest at 5mph

~Starkville, MS

Goodmorning everyone and welcome to another Face of the Sky forecast. Well, the weekend turned out to be cold as expected with temperatures in the 30s for your highs and lows in the teens throughout the weekend. However, conditions are going to be much warmer this week as temps began to draw closer to its average temperatures for this time of month.

Today, we will see temperatures make it to the lower 40s with plenty of sunshine for most of the day. Although, temperatures will be in the 40s the wind chill will be the most important factor here in determing how the air really feels to you. The wind chill will be around 28 degrees making it still a very chilly day. High pressure will set us up for a nice pleasant day with few clouds coming in around the afternoon. Winds will continually come out of the northwest at 5 mph. More clouds will be around for tonight than the other previous two nights as the low drops down to the mid 20s.

As we progress throughout the week, expect for each day to be warmer than the previous day. Stay warm and God bless!

Arctic Air In Place

Today: High of 26 degrees with partly cloudy skies
Tonight: Low of 14 degrees with mostly cloudy skies

~Starkville, MS

Goodmorning everyone and I hope all is well with you! One word to summarize my current state right now and that word is cold! As you all are full aware it has been so dreadful cold these past couple of days with few periods of snow throughout Thursday. Yesterday's highs only reach 35 and this morning I woke up to a temperature of 16 degrees!! Talk about your cold weather! If you like cold winters, then this is definitely your type of season. As far as today's goes, temperatures will not rise too much today.

Although it will be sunny and for the most part a clear day, the sun will not make a bit of difference as temperatures struggle to make it to the mid 20s today. We are still in the midst of a deep trough which is sending some bitterly, cold Arctic air all over the south. Wherever you go in the south, it will be cold. Drier conditions has settle into the area and will continue to remain throughout the weekend. Tonight, temperatures will once again plummet to the teens with cloudy skies with winds out of the north at 5mph.

If your looking for the weekend to be warmer, then I'm afraid you'll have to wait til next week because the cold weather is here to stay for the weekend as well. Good news is that each day temperatures will gradually and slowly begin to warm up. For Saturday, highs will be in lower 30s with sunny skies while Sunday highs looks to be in the mid 30s. Lows for both nights will continue to be dreadful cold with temps in the mid teens. With little moisture in the air, snow will not play a part even though it will be awfully cold.

By next week, we will begin to see temperatures back on the rise and to its normal averages. Stay warm and take precautionary measures if you have to stay out in the weather or even drive in it. It was reported on WJTV that 40 accidents occurred in Northern MS on Thursday due to icy roadways. So, be careful if your out. Enjoy the weekend, try to stay warm, and God bless!
