Hi friends and welcome to your Wednesday's Face of the Sky forecast. A lot of heavy and thick cloud coverage out this morning around the Brandon and Jackson area. Even now as we speak I am seeing a very thick stratus deck in the sky and it seems as though it could rain at any moment now. Despite the imminent threat of rain, I don't have rain forecasted in our area today. If we do have any drop of moisture, it will probably occur mostly in north MS. However, don't be alarm of the clouds outside as the chance for rain in the Jackson area is slim at the current moment. The clouds should begin to erode away a bit by the afternoon giving way to sunny and very warm conditions once again. Don't expect the clouds to go away easily though.

What's Happening Atmospherically
Looking at the 850mb map, we see that the southern region is still getting some nice warm air advection. The surface maps still show a nice high pressure ridge having an effect over our region which in turn has been the reason for the pleasant but very warm conditions we've having. In the past few days since last Thursday, highs have been in the 80s with mild lows in upper 50s. It certainly feels more like summer than it does early spring. Even for today, highs are expected to be in the lower to mid 80s today despite an increase in clouds today.

The reason for the increase in clouds is actually due to a weak frontal system entering the south. As the high pressure that has been controlling our weather patten for a good bit weakens, this frontal system will start to move in. This front will not bring much rain in the forecast but due to the pressure gradient we will have windy conditions today. Wind gusts today could get up to 20mph. There not only will be windy conditions but a much more cloudy day today as this front swings through. The biggest impact that it will have on our weather pattern is that it bring us back down to our normal temperatures around this season by tomorrow. Tomorrow, we will see highs back into the lower 70s.
By this weekend, our chance for precipitation will start to increase some. A low pressure will move in by late Friday evening and even the majority of the rain will mainly reside in north MS, with possible stray showers that could affect our area early Saturday morning. We could also have showers throughout Saturday afternoon and evening as the map to our left depicts. There is still much uncertainty with the timing of showers this weekend but as we draw closer I should be able to fine-tune my forecast with models having a better grasp as we draw near to the weekend. As of right now, I still think next Monday we have a good chance of precipitation and maybe some severe weather if everything lines up and if there is a capping inversion in place.

Today
Clouds should depart just a little around Jackson making way for partly cloudy conditions. So not as sunny as yesterday as we had mostly cirrus clouds throughout yesterday's evening. A lot windier today as well as winds will be between 10 to 15mph from the southwest. Highs again will be in the 80s.

Tonight
Lows will be much cooler than it was last night as lows drop into the upper 40s. You might even need to wear a light jacket to church tonight as winds will still be a bit breezy at 5 to 10mph from the west.

Thursday
Highs should return back to normal as temperatures should peak between 72-74 degrees for tomorrow. We should see more of the sun as well with winds from the northwest at 5-10 mph.
Hope you all have a great and fantastic day! God bless!

Good morning to everyone and I hope you all had a fantastic weekend. Temperatures were just lovely and conditions were just the same. I must say I certainly had a great weekend especially Saturday. I couldn't have ask for a better day. Saturday also featured a full moon which was named "Supermoon" due to the proximity of it from Earth. Also, this weekend on Sunday marked the official day of spring and we definitely are in the midst of spring conditions although we have not receive any adequate rain recently. High pressure has really been controlling conditions throughout the southern region and no major front has really enter the region. So basically we have been quiet as for as active weather goes and it looks like this dry spell will continue for this past week.

What's Happening Atmospherically
This dry spell will continue throughout the course of this week as high pressure continues to sit over the gulf to the east of Florida. Warm southerly air from the Gulf of Mexico has warmed our region up a bit especially starting yesterday and today. We are seeing temperatures all the way into the mid 80s. So very warm indeed across the south. Now we do have a weak wave that will push through later this evening but it will only serve to bring in more clouds for the evening hours into Wednesday morning. So when will our next chance of rain come?

It looks like Saturday afternoon we could potentially see some storms in our location as we have a bit of a frontal system moving through. For right now, nothing is for sure and it only looks like a slight possibility. Also, there is a line of showers beginning next Monday that looks to give us significant rain. For those of you growing plants and working in gardens, this should provide a glimpse of hope if your looking for rain. The surface analysis chart below depicts significant amount of showers next Monday around the afternoon in Mississippi.Today
Expect highs to be well into the mid 80s in Jackson with mostly sunny conditions. A nice and warm day with southwest winds to cool us off a bit at 10 to 15mph. By tonight, clouds will increase starting late this evening. We'll have a warm night with lows in the lower 60s. Winds will come out of the south at 10mph.

Wednesday
More clouds in the sky for tomorrow but highs will still be in the 80s with windy conditions. We could see wind gust as high as 20mph.

Thanks for visiting your Face of the Sky forecast and God bless!

Hi and I hope everyone is doing great on this Friday. I know most students are off for Spring Break and certainly if you were in MS, temperatures has not been a disappointing factor. We've been having a quiet week concerning active weather. Conditions have been just fine with temperatures in the 70s and a nice southerly breeze. With that being said, conditions are going to continue to stay very warm and nice throughout the weekend.

What's Happening Atmospherically
High pressure continues to maintain control over the southeast which is allowing for sunny and warm conditions. Even for today and with the upcoming weekend, temperatures are expected to be very warm and into or near the 80s. Now a weak frontal boundary should move in by early morning of tomorrow but it'll only serve to bring in clouds in the area. Most of the rain associated with this front will stay up north. So this weekend looks to be a sunny yet rain-free weekend which is good news for most people.

Weekend Forecast

Temperatures near or at 80 degrees throughout the weekend with sunny conditions. Don't let the morning clouds fool you Saturday into thinking rain for the day. We should be rain-free through the weekend. If you love to fish, play tennis or basketball, eating lunch outside, family reunions, or any outdoor event would be absolutely perfect this weekend.

Enjoy your weekend because I know I will! God bless!

I don't know about you all but I was rather chilly last night as well as when I woke up this morning. Temperatures last night brought a chill in the air and it certainly made it difficult to get out of bed this morning. I had to get up anyways. As the saying goes, " You got to do what you got to do." The skew T chart to the right shows the temperature line which is highlighted in red and the dewpoint line which is highlighted in green. One thing you will probably notice here is that these lines are pretty much spread apart from the 900 to the 400 level. This indicates a dry atmosphere and clear conditions throughout these levels even at 6:00(12z) this morning. These clear conditions will be indicative of the conditions throughout the rest of the week with sunny skies on hand. Temperatures this morning across the state was in the lower 40s to upper 30s. Some northern counties even saw 32 degrees last night. I had a friend asked me last night if winter was making its return.lol I think this is winter's way of saying goodbye as after yesterday, temperatures will continue to rise starting today.

What's Happening Atmospherically

Ridge of high pressure shown in the map above will continue to build over the southern region and the further west the high pressure moves the warmer temperatures will be. By Friday, we should reach the 80 degree mark for the first time this year. Pleasant and warm temperatures are expected through now into next week although a front will move in on Saturday. However, I think we will mostly only develop clouds in the region and maybe we might get a few sprinkles but nothing more than that. This quiet period should last until next week where our next chance for rain appear as though it will come by next Wednesday. If you are on Spring Break and you decided to just stay in MS, the weather is looking pretty nice for you.

Today
Starting off cool this morning but will warm up quite nicely as highs today reaches into the lower 70s. Plenty of sunshine with very few clouds in the sky. East wind about 5 mph but becoming calm by the end of the day. Although tonight, we will have another clear night but temperatures will be a few degrees warmer than last night. Lows in the mid 40s with southeast winds at 5mph but very light by the end of the night.

Today's blog is shorter than normal, but a simple blog is all it takes for a simple and quiet week ahead and might I add wonderful Spring conditions. Enjoy the day and God bless!

Waking up this Tuesday morning you found that it was pretty cool while you set out for your morning commute. In Jackson, temperatures were in the lower 40s around 6:45 this morning. We are pretty much done with all of the rain that came through on yesterday from a squall line. According to the Storm Prediction Center Report yesterday, there were about 11 reports concerning strong winds and four of those reports were right here in Rankin county where I live at. There were a few power lines down due to tree limbs and even trees themselves falling upon. Besides that, not much damage occurred yesterday. I actually heard the tornado siren go off during the afternoon of yesterday. Although no tornado touch down here, there was a report of a tornado that touch down very briefly in Marion county but not much damage from it. Currently, this cold front that pass through yesterday evening is now in portions of Georgia and Tennessee. A dry and cool airmass has moved in placed and we will feel the effect of this airmass through the rest of today with lower temperatures on hand.

What's Happening Atmospherically
Behind this upper level low from yesterday, a cool and dry airmass has moved into the southern region and impact our temperatures for today. We've been having highs in the upper 60s and lower 70s for the past couple of days here in Jackson but it will take a slight dip as highs will only extend into the lower 60s. Now, the further you head south temperatures will stay near normal around the upper 60s. The more north you are in MS, the cooler the temperatures are going to be. The Gulf of Mexico right now is very warm and definitely dry and I believe is the reason for temperatures down in the south to still remain right around normal. Also, sky conditions will clear up much faster there than in the north. Due to colder advection and cylonic flow, these will generate cooler highs around central and northern MS. Also, due to this process you will have more stratus clouds up north above Interstate 20 which will help keep highs in the 50s and lower 60s in those areas as well.

For the most part, we are entering a quiet week as high pressure begins to settle into the region once more. As it moves further west, the warmer temperatures will get. So in contrast of today, highs tomorrow are expected to be in the lower 70s here in Jackson. By Thursday, we could see highs near 80 degrees. Our next chance of rain is not expected until about mid-next week and we could have some strong storms at that time. However, we are still several days from next week, so the timing and forecasting of these storms are not accurate yet.

Today
We are going to have a mixture of clouds today and some breaks within those clouds where we will see the sun out at times around Jackson. Highs will be in the lower 60s and kept cool with a west northwest wind at 5 to 10 mph. Remember, much cooler and cloudier the further you head north above I-20 while warmer and clearer conditions further south.

Tonight
Tuesday night, the whole MS region should be clear and should allow for some decent radiational cooling to take place in some locations. Some areas will find themselves in the 30s tonight. For instance, here in Jackson we could see a low of 39 tonight and I am going to go with that forecast. Winds will become calm throughout the overnight.

Wednesday
By tomorrow, temperatures will be back to around normal across the state with plenty of sunshine for everyone. Highs will be in the lower 70s with sunny conditions.

Thanks for viewing your Face of the Sky forecast and do come back tomorrow. For those students who are looking at this blog while on Spring Break, hope you all are safe and having fun on your break. I hope everyone has a great today and God bless!

Welcome everyone to your Monday's edition of your Face of the Sky forecast! I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend and got to enjoy it. Saturday as I pointed out in my forecast on Friday was picture perfect as we had temperatures in the mid 70s with beautiful skies and lovely conditions. I had a chance to really take advantage of the day Saturday playing tennis and just being outside. Although cloudy for the most part on Sunday, temperatures were still very warm and in the 70s as well. This also didn't stop me from shooting some hoops all day yesterday. We are certainly in this spring-like pattern and this will continue throughout this week. We are going to have some showers and possibly severe storms pass through later this afternoon but by Wednesday lovely spring-time conditions will make its return with temperatures coming close to 80 degrees by this weekend.

What's Happening Atmospherically
After having high pressure situated throughout the south for the majority of the weekend, a low pressure begin to come into the picture on Sunday hence the overhanging clouds we had on yesterday. Even now surface analysis charts shows this low pressure featuring precipitation in the central Arkansas and Missouri area. This system will start to give us some showers later today starting sometime before noon.

There is a slight risk for strong to severe thunderstorms today containing winds of up to 50 to 60 mph and may possibly feature hail from the size of a penny to a quarter size. This is from the make-up of a cold front with broken line of thunderstorms moving east today. Daytime heating will cause an unstable airmass and wind shear will be present enough in providing strong to severe storms. As this deepening low moves over the area it will give us some heavy downpours for the afternoon. I'm expecting a little under an inch of rain for our day today. With some forcing in the front of this cold front, expect gusty and windy conditions this afternoon along with the rain.
Precipitation should last throughout the majority of today's evening and night hours. By the end of it, we could be looking at close to an inch of rain falling. So for Tuesday, most of the line of showers will be push off toward our east and you will experience a very dry and cool airmass in its place. I'm talking about temperatures falling about 13 to 15 degrees from today and ending up around the upper 50s for tomorrow. A good surge of cold air advection will take place on Tuesday and give us this huge drop in temperatures. The way things are going to be set-up is that temperatures will be much cooler in the north while the south will be warmer. So looking at temperatures in the 50s in the northern and central areas of MS like Tupelo, Starkville, and Oxford. Cities such as Hattiesburg, Ocean Springs, Laurel and other southern towns and counties will see temperatures in the 60s and lower 70s. So a bit of a temperature gradient tomorrow due to cold air advection mostly dominant in the north while warm air from the gulf will keep temperatures in the south from being affected too much.

After Tuesday, temperatures should rise back to normal and return us back to our pleasant spring weather.

Today
Rain will be the highlight for our afternoon as we have a line of showers moving in from the west and will feature some strong to severe storms. Windy conditions through the afternoon with wind speeds between 10 and 15 mph from the south. Some areas have a chance of receiving hail in some parts. Rain totals could total anywhere from 0.50" to 1" throughout the Jackson area and closer to an 1" the further north you go. Highs today will be in the upper 60s.

Tonight
Rain should continue throughout the overnight and end shortly in the early morning of Tuesday. Cloudy and temperatures will start to take a dive as lows drop into the mid 40s in Jackson. Winds should die down just a bit with a west wind at 5 to 10 mph.

Tuesday
Look for a dry and cool airmass on Tuesday as conditions will certainly be felt. Highs tomorrow are only expected to get into the upper 50s and possibly the lower 60s in Jackson as a combination of clouds and cooler airmass takes hold of the region.
Thanks for viewing today's Face of the Sky forecast. Let's not forget about the people of Japan and their situation. Be sure to lift them up in your prayers. I thank you all each and every day for supporting my blog. Thank you for you time and your love and continue to pray for me. God bless!

Happy Johnny Appleseed Day to you all and thanks for viewing your Friday's edition of your Face of the Sky forecast. What a beautiful Friday it is with nothing but blue and clear skies all over Mississippi at this current hour. There is not a cloud at all in the Jackson and Brandon areas and it is mostly clear throughout MS. Temperatures are steadily now as some areas even bottom out to the freezing level last night. Radiational cooling had a hand in that as far as dropping temperatures rapidly and close to and below 32 degrees in areas such as Greenwood, Tupelo, and Starkville. Radiational cooling takes place when you have clear skies at night with minimal light winds. Temperatures are rebounding rather quickly as highs should be around normal today and will be warmer than yesterday. To add a very quick note here, elsewhere across the world an 8.9 earthquake in Japan triggers a tsunami there as well as waves from this tsunami are reaching the state of Oregon. A huge impact and this is a developing story, so more to come in the next few hours. For more info, please visit http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/42024659/ns/world_news-asiapacific/?gt1=43001
Now, lets get on with your weekend forecast!

What's Happening Atmospherically
High pressure is the primary reason for the lovely sunny conditions we are currently having. Most of the south is within this ridge of high pressure. Conditions are dry and a bit cool for the eleventh day of March and the official day of spring is still days away. Observing satellite images, water vapor image shows dry air for portion of central and southern MS. We will be warmer than yesterday due to this ridge and we will continue to warm up through the weekend. As this high pressure moves further east, strong warm air advection will start to become more evident and will allow for gorgeous temperatures to reach the 70s by Saturday and going into Sunday.

As far as precipitation goes, looks like our next chance of rain could come by Monday afternoon. By this evening we will have a developing low pressure system from the midwest plains start to form and progress southward. This is a slow moving development and it won't reach us until Sunday. Right now, the GFS model has the bulk of the rain staying mostly in north MS but we could still get some showers from this even though it may not be much at all. However, for the weekend it looks to be very pleasant and mostly dry.

Today
A lovely Spring-like day with highs in the lower 60s today. Clear and blue skies to help send most students off on a great Spring Break. Winds will come out of the southwest at 5mph. Another cool night but not as cool as last night with lows in the lower 40s and mostly clear.

Saturday
The perfect picture of what a Spring day should resemble for Saturday with lovely highs in the mid 70s. Ample amount of sunshine to filled the day with clear skies. A nice breeze from the southwest at 5 to 10 mph will cool us off a bit as we are running around enjoying the beautiful day.

Sunday
Another day featuring highs in the 70s, however, clouds should make its return as an approaching front moves closer to the area. Even though in Jackson, we are not expecting any rain for Sunday northern areas in MS could have some evening showers. Winds out of the south at 5 to 10 mph.

Long-term
Our next chance of rain in Jackson could come Monday afternoon. After that, a quiet period next week with even warmer temperatures by the end of next Friday. Enjoy this wonderful weekend and may God continue to bless each and every one of you!

A good day to everyone and welcome to your Thursday edition of your Face of the Sky forecast. Most parts of Mississippi is seeing clear and sunny skies right now although the northern portion of MS is still enveloped under a lot of cloud coverage. Due to this cloud cover, temperatures are lower in cites such as Starkville, Columbus, as well as Tupelo compared to what it is here in Jackson. Outside my window currently, I am seeing a few stray clouds mostly cumulus but it is all sunny here. As we approach the afternoon hours, most of the dense thick clouds in MS should erode away as high pressure moves deep into the region. Currently, conditions are a little cool as temperatures are in the upper 40s. Temperatures will rise a bit through the afternoon but for today we will be on the mild side. Unlike last weekend where Saturday was a complete wash-out, this weekend looks to be fairly dry.

What's Happening Atmospherically
After a quick moving front pass through here yesterday morning giving us plenty of rain, we are left in its wake dry and cool conditions. A trough from the north has drop into the southern region and we are getting a lot of cold air advection (850mb) flowing through here. Typically, that is what you usually experience after a cold front in the spring passes through. Right behind a cold front is typically cooler and drier air due to the dry line that flows behind a cold front. We are experiences that right now as milder temperatures will be on tap for today. A 1032 high pressure has sunk into the region as well and will help give us plenty of sunshine for today.

As we get closer to the night hours, temperatures will drop steadily and rapidly as we will have clear skies for tonight. Due to clear conditions and light winds, radiational cooling will take place and we could see some locations feature temperatures at or below freezing. These temperatures will mostly be in our eastern counties, but here in Jackson we could get awfully close. So if you have any valuable plants outside, please be sure to protect them by possibly bringing them indoors.

As this high pressure continues to maintain its stay in the region and move eastwardly, we will start to see temperatures go back to normal as by Friday we will be back into the 60s. For this weekend, we could be in for an uneventful weather pattern as most of the weekend will be dry and pleasant even though surface analysis charts show a cold front trying to make it way through here late weekend. Temperatures will creep back into the 70s on Saturday because of the strong warm southerly air that will come from the south as the high pressure begins to moving further east . However, with this front moving in Sunday models does not show much of any precipitation from this. Also, models are in disagreement with rain chances for Sunday evening. Right now, it only looks like spotty showers around MS Sunday evening into Monday.

Today
Looks like a sunny day throughout the entire Mississippi region as high pressure settles into the area. We will feel a little cool as temperatures will only get to the upper 50s despite ample amount of sunshine. Winds out of the north will be the primary reason for cool conditions with wind speeds between 10 and 15mph.

Tonight
Some areas will come close to experiencing at or below freezing temperatures as we will have clear skies tonight with calm winds. In the Jackson area, we should drop anywhere between 33 and 36 degrees.

Friday
Its going to be a lot warmer Friday as temperatures by the afternoon should reach into the 60s. What a great way to start the weekend off with warm conditions and lots of sunshine.

Long-term
Anything can change when your dealing with long-term forecasting but it looks like the majority of next week could be fairly dry. It would be nice for a change after starting this month off with severe weather. Thanks for stopping by to view your Face of the Sky forecast and God bless!

Damages Reported from the Squall Line Last Night

As you all may have been aware, a squall line featuring some severe storms pass through Mississippi in the early morning of today. Around 2a.m. a tornado siren actually went off around the Brandon area. Luckily my home was spared from any damages, but some radar imagery showed a nice little bow echo along I-20 and in the Brandon location. As of right now, I don't have confirmation of a tornado hitting the ground but there were several severe storms that cause much damage in some counties. Currently~as of 10:10a.m.
A good Tuesday to you all and I hope each and every one of you are doing well. Yesterday, we were mostly dry and free from any lingering showers left from Sunday. We also warmed up just a bit as we got up to 58 degrees for our high around Jackson. Today, we are starting off very moist and on the wet side of things as rain has once again return back into our forecast. Observing satellite images earlier today, we are definitely under some immense cloud cover with a rather large stratus deck covering the skies. I don't think we'll see much of the sun today with all of the cloud cover that we are underneath. Expecting rain for much of the day with severe storms later this evening and moving into tomorrow.

What's Happening Atmospherically
Models shows precipitation throughout the entire day today, so it is going to be a wet day for the most part. Surface analysis maps show a warm front moving across the region providing moisture ahead of what will eventually become a cold front moving the LA and MS corridors. These two elements are really going to provid lots of moisture and precipitation throughout MS and throughout Jackson. Due to the excess rain, a flash flood watch will be issued and it remains in effect from 6p.m. to Wednesday morning. This flash flood watch will issued for the northeast portion of Louisiana and Mississippi. This is also taking into consideration the amount of rainfall that fell this past weekend and with the addition of more rain this evening this could potentially cause flooding problems. The potential for heavy rain is highest across portions of southeastern Mississippi where rainfall totals during the entire event could exceed 4 inches or more.

Interesting enough will be the temperatures today. Lows tonight will actually be warmer than our highs for today despite not having the sun warming up the environment at night. The reason being is because of the cold front that will swing through here later tonight and we're going to have some strong southwest winds pouring into the area. It is always typically warmer ahead of a cold front, so instead of cooling down tonight conditions will actually warm up. That is why I didn't have the highs and lows down for local cities around Mississippi like I normally do just because I didn't want to confuse you all as to why lows were higher than the highs.

On top of the flash flooding, we could some isolated to scattered severe thunderstorms pass through this evening into Wednesday morning. The main threat of severness will come later tonight. These storms will be capable of producing hail the size of quarter, have excess winds of 60 miles per hour, and could possibly produce tornadoes although since we're under alot of clouds I think that will limit the make-up of a tornado forming. We need for the sun to come out and give us plenty of energy in order to have anything sort of a tornado to form. So basically the forcing mechanisms for convective development is not all there yet. However, if we get some sort of a capping inversion with some type of forcing then this should result in thunderstorm development. The Storm Prediction Center at this time has a moderate risk of severe thunderstorms in parts of La and southern MS. This is certainly an area to pay close attention to as a tornado or two could form in this area. For those of you living in southern MS, be sure to pay close attention to your local weather news and have your noaa radio on for any updates.

Wednesday
By Wednesday afternoon and evening, most of the rain will clear off and we should return back into our quiet weather pattern. After Thursday, our next chance for rain will probably come the following Monday. For now, be sure to stay updated with your local weather station and be sure to check back in to Face of the Sky as I will have updates if anything breaks out. Thanks for viewing your Face of the Sky forecast! Stay dry and God bless!

Hi everyone and I hope all is well with you all. I hope everyone enjoyed the Severe Weather Awareness posts that I put up during the last week of February. If you did not get a chance to check them out you can always search the archives.

I took last week off from my blog because I have been very busy and also I started substitute teaching last week and so I didn't quite find the time to blog. This week I hope to get things back on track. Thank you all for the support and continue to pray for me that God will continue to lead me in his path. I know in due time he will prepare a meteorology job for me.

I should have a full detailed report for you all tomorrow. We were a little warmer today after only having highs in the upper 40s. Today's highs got into the upper 50s around the Jackson area. Temperatures will be in the 60s throughout the rest of the week and we have another threat of severe weather for Wednesday, so I'll be sure to give you all the complete details coming up tomorrow. Enjoy the rest of the day and God bless!
