A Chance of Snow??? Could it Be??

~Starkville, MS

Today: High of 40 with cloudy and some misty conditions/ winds NW at 5mph

Tonight: Snow: Best chance of snow starting around 10 and ending around 8. Anywhere from an half an inch to 2" inches. Expecting low of 31 with overcast conditions and winds NW at 5mph

A very interesting day to say the least! A possible chance of snow throughout the Mississippi region today. Some areas are expecting anywhere from 4" to 6" inches of snow. This is definitely a big and exciting event to follow. Most of the snow event should start around and after the midnight hours, so allow me to take you to that point.

Cloudy skies will highlight the day seeing temperatures around the lower 30s. Winds will come out the northeast at 5mph. It will continue to stay that way throughout most of the day until that developing low pressure system in the panhandle of Texas right now moves into the MS area later this evening. Yesterday, models was showing not much snow here near our counties such as Oktibbeha, Lowndes, Noxubee, and other neighboring counties. I even stated that we'll see no snow, but models have changed just a bit and have trended more moisture to the north. We could see anywhere between 1" to 2" of snow. Below is a map of Mississippi depicting the forecast for the total amount of snow:

Picture brought to you by NOAA

Each line depicts the total amount of snow in the MS region. The red line shows 3" to 6" inches, the yellow line shows 1" to 4", and the blue line show 1" to 2" So, places such as Hattiesburg, Brookhaven, McComb, and even Jackson will see snow amounts between 4" to 8" inches. Towns such as Philadelphia, Canton, and Yazoo City will see amounts of 2" inches. Starkville, Columbus, and Louisville will see possibly close to an inch or 2. The heaviest amounts of snow in MS should occur between the times of 10pm tonight until 10am Friday morning. So, look for snow here in Starkville to start around 10 tonight and lasting to around 8 Friday morning. I'll definitely keep a closer eye on this. National Weather Service has also issued a Winter Storm Warning in effect for tonight and into Friday afternoon. With snow accumulating there will be lots of school closing especially for the southern portion of MS. For MSU students, there's a possibility of closing just depends on exactly how much snow we can actually get up here. I'm forecasting snow amounts getting near or just above an inch here in Starkville.

We will certainly have the right type of conditions for snow as the low falls to to lower 30s tonight with winds from the north at 5mph.

With this Winter Storm being issued comes some precautionary measures to take heed of. If your traveling, especially to the southern portion of MS, be sure to take caution as snow can lead to the road being slippery. Take pets and valuable items such as flowers inside to protect them from these conditions. Due to freezing overnight, there's a chance of freezing pipes so you might want to leave your water dripping just a little bit to prevent your pipes from over freezing.

So, it should be an interesting day. A big snow event such as this doen't happen too often, so while its snowing be sure to enjoy God's control of the weather. Also, MSU plays Ole Miss tonight so Go Bulldawgs!!!!! I will continue to monitor this storm's progress and the conditions outside. Like always, thanks for viewing your Face of the Sky forecast! Stay warm, be safe, and God bless!
