Currently
A good Thursday to you all as the day started off warmer than previous mornings as forecasted. So, you didn't have to wear such a heavy coat this time this morning as temperatures started off in the mid 50s today. Even at this hour around 10a.m, it is steadly increasing to the upper 50s with lots of low stratus clouds in the sky. We didn't get the amount of rain expected upon last night and this morning as this rain system quickly pass through the Mississippi region. Even at my house I only received light showers just for brief moments. Most of the rain has moved off toward Alabama and we'll only get a light sprinkle or two in the area today.

Today's Weather
Well, it was pretty warm throughout the night and has carried on well for today. Temperatures are going to be well above normal due to a pressure gradient. Pressure gradient is defined as the difference between high and low pressure. We have a low over Kansas and a high located in the Carolinas and because of the gradient or tension between the two, it is causing gusty southeast winds to keep temperatures warmer than normal. Despite the cloud coverage, we should see temperatures in the 70s today. The clouds will continue to hang about and we'll see a peak from the sun at times especially around the late afternoon hours. By tonight, we'll still have most of the clouds making for a mostly cloudy night with temperatures even higher than this morning. Looks like spring-time really wants to make an early entrance! However, this weekend a cold snap will come through late Sunday bringing conditions back to normal.

New Year's Eve
-Reason for Severe Weather
A very important forecast due to outside events and fireworks displays. As I have been forecasting all week, we are still on track for potential severe weather for Friday afternoon into Saturday morning. Nothing has really deviated from the models as they are still on course for lots of rain and a chance for severe weather outbreak. The Storm Prediction Center in Norman, OK still has a slight risk for the mid-south and the lower MS valley. You have alot of different elements that goes into severe weather. A high amplitude trough helping to strengthen a closed low. That strong surface low is going push eastward with some forcing and we will certainly have the warm surge of moisture from the Gulf of Mexico. Dewpoints will be in the mid 60s, so lots of moisture and some energy provided from CAPE(Convective Available Potential Energy) values. Basically, it is the amount of energy in the atmoshere. Higher values of CAPE indicates greater potential for severe weather. Usually a sounding helps us(meteorologists) in showing CAPE values as well as helicities values which is also important in severe weather. What will limit the potential for severe weather I believe is the clouds hanging around tomorrow. However, if we get a bit of sunshine to heat the surface, then that chance goes up leading to more instability. Lots of clouds will limit the potential for severe weather. Although we didn't get much rain for last night, both Friday and Saturday could very well make up for it with rainfall totals forecast between a half-in-inch to an inch and a half. We could very well close this year out with heavy rain, damaging winds, large hail, and a possible tornado.
-Forecast
Most of the heavy rain will soon start up in the afternoon hours mainly after 12p.m on Friday. Along with the rain will come the potential for severe weather, so please tune in to your local weather stations for further updates. These weather conditions will last throughout the duration of Friday night and into Saturday morning. Most of the severe weather should occur in the afternoon and late evening hours of Friday and by nightfall only just the impacts of heavy rain and strong winds. This will certainly impact fireworks events especially with the risk of severe weather and heavy rain. Highs for Friday are going to be in the lower 70s and by Friday night bottom out to the lower 50s. Strong southeast winds at 15 to 20mph will make conditions very windy throughout Friday day, even gusting to 25mph at times. It will decrease slightly by nightfall to 10 to 15mph. So, the risk for severe weather to close out 2010. Even if you do go out to a party or an outdoor event, please check with local weather stations and just get updates concerning the weather. Also, note that a few of the outdoor events will probably be canceled due to the possible weather so be sure to checked or call first before going to an event. Here are some events around the Jackson area that will be going on:

New Year's Eve with David Banner-Fire-209 Commerce St.-December 31, 9p.m.

New Year's Eve with Stevie J & Blues Eruption-F.Jones Corner-303 N.Farish St.-Dec. 31, 11pm

New Year's Eve Party with Tommy Akers Band-Reed Pierce's Sportman's Grill-Dec. 31,9pm

I can't seem to find what all fireworks event will be held at across the state but if you do have any information please just send me an email and I'll be sure to post it. I will not be able to work on my blog for Friday because I will be traveling to Florida for the Gator Bowl. However, I hope you all have a Happy New Years and stay safe. Go Bulldawgs and God Bless!
